(The original version of this piece appeared in the Brownstone Institute on February 3, 2022.) It was a grey, bitter-cold day in January, and all the clocks were striking thirteen. On the radio, the host was hectoring about “concerning scenes” that were sweeping across the highways of the nation.
When I toured the anti-mandate rallies in Toronto I could not have imagined them being more joyous, inclusive and quintessentially Canadian. They might well have been Canada Day celebrations. The only clue they were not, were humorous slogans on banners, and the presence of brooding, heavily armed, black-robed police at every intersection.
